My career in the oil field began by reading the Oil and Gas Journal at the university of Hawaii when I was still in the Navy. The thought of drilling for oil while floating on the surface of the ocean was intriguing and mind boggling. Oil rigs drill 10,000ft through the water and then an additional 20,000 ft into the earth's crust. Did you know that the 5 inch oil drilling pipe bends like a straw when 3,000ft of it drops to the ocean floor?

I started as a mud logger on a jack up oil rig and then roustabouted for a year on a semi-submersible. Then I spent a year parachuting into rigs around the US, Middle East and Africa as a oil field service hand for Ross Hill SCR systems. Shortly there after I was offered a job as an electronic technician on a GlobalSantafe drillship that has dynamically positioning thrusters that keep it in one place so we can drill to greater and greater depths.

Now I am working as a maintenance specialist for Transocean helping maintain the oil drilling rig equipment. Our job is to support the software application that keeps track of all the capital equipment on the oil rigs so no one gets hurt and we don't waste money due to lack of maintenance.
